The size limit per file is 4GB because xbox can only read fat32 system from disc and from streaming it still only accepts 4GB files or smaller.

Be sure when converting/splitting to use the 'safe sync' option in gotsent/xenonmkv or your a/v will get out of sync when splitting (assuming you need to split).
Contribute, and we'll all enjoy HDMania - see you on the boards.

If one of my uploads is dead - PM me and I will reupload, RS recently deleted any unused files.

This is a common misconception.Actually, you can play WMV and AVI of any size (not sure about MP4).
The only limitation on optical discs (dvd,cd) is their capacity. You can easily play >4GB movies from a dual layer dvd.
There is also no limit that I have found for streaming... I have played both WMV and AVI that are >7GB over a wireless network and also from dual layer disc. (I don't have any >4GB MP4 to try)
And about FAT32 - it is a hard drive format (not disc) but it is what puts the 4GB limit on a drive. And it is not your only choice for formatting an external USB drive to use w/your 360. You can format to HFS+ and there is NO file size limit! To format a drive to HFS+ and to be able to read it in windows, you'll need one of these programs:
Macdrive:

TransMac: not my ups, credit to OP on these^
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/125625572/TrnsMc__v8.1.rar

pass: 4shar1ng
not sure on Mac but I'm pretty sure you can format/view HFS+ in Leopard

I'm using xenonmkv to encode mkv to mp4.. although I don't like the audio downmix.... the files have to be downsized to 4.36 gbs or they won't play.. to pass this limit you must use an avi or wmv... ( and that's a lot of re-encoding to do)

what you can do is have them on a shared folder on a PC, laptop or MAC and then connect the xbox with them... I have a wireless g network and never had any problems watching movies..

the best software to use is xenonmkv in my opinion

there is a way to make xbox region free but you have to hack your firmware on the dvd drive, that is going to void your warranty.. and If you connect to xbox live and play with a hacked firmware, you will probably be banned for life with that account..
